South Ho bart Primary School, formerly the Upper Macquarie Street
School, was
established in 1858 opposite All Saints Church. Early
photographs of the school show Daisy Cottage which is still standing today.
The original school was replaced in 1895 by the large
sandstone building (now Adult Ed). The original building was thought to
have been used for overflow in later years . The
building was sold in July 1912 as Department would have had to pay to have
sewer lines connected and believed the building would not be required
The building located at the bottom of Anglesea Street bordered by the Hobart rivulet was
erected in 1930 and is currently occupied by early childhood classes. Two
further classrooms were built in 1940 and the two storied brick building in
1964 when Primary classes moved from Macquarie Street to the site they
occupy at present. It was at this time the school changed its name from Macquarire
Strdeet
School to South
Hobart Primary. In 1968, land was purchased in Weld Street to build a Kindergarten
which was occupied in 1971. In 1983 a gymnasium, change rooms, canteen, new
toilets and a covered way linking buildings were constructed.
The school today is situated peacefully in an extensive and
lovely landscaped area bordered by bushland and the South Hobart Rivulet.
The semi rural communities of Fern Tree and Ridgeway in the foothills of
the Wellington Range adjoin suburban South
Hobart and the major part of the student population is drawn
from this area. The suburb has retained its early mix of rural, light
industrial and residential land use to the present day.
A location minutes away
from the CBD, a diverse built environment including a number of historic
sites and easy access to the surrounding bush make South
Hobart an attractive place to live. The proximity of Wellington Range and the urban/bush margin
location provides an appealing setting that strongly influences the school
and is reflected in the school logo.
